P2P… the way ahead

We keep hearing this term quite often… P2P technology, great for file sharing… but what is this P2P? What exactly does it mean? P2P basically stands for peer-to-peer technology. Peer-to-peer is a communication model in which each party has the same capabilities and either party can initiate a communication session. On the Internet, peer-to-peer is a type of transient Internet network that allows a group of computer users with the same networking program to connect with each other and directly access files from one another's hard drives. Each computer acts as a “sever” as well as the “client”. Unlike the usual networks, there is no centralized server. Thus, the downloading is much faster.
In a simple language, it is something like the social networking sites we have online. Say something like orkut. You login to orkut, and you have access to millions of users in that site’s social network. You can contact them directly and exchange messages directly. Similarly, the millions of users in orkut can contact you directly and exchange messages. The more members in orkut, the more friends you can make, the more messages you can exchange! There is no central person monitoring your actions. There is no central person you need to go through to get in touch with anyone else. This is exactly how P2P works. It is the best social networking for data files! The more number of people in the network, the larger number of files you can exchange with them directly.
So how do you go about this? As simply as you go about orkut. Just become a member of a file sharing site with P2P technology and you can access movie, songs and video downloads.
Though there are quite a few download sites, ones providing P2P technology are few. The concept is fast gaining grounds and P2P is the way ahead. Certain sites might charge a fee to become a member. Infact, I personally feel that paid sites are better as there is no nonsense there. The members are genuinely interested in file sharing and this the amount of risk is lower. However, if the site is charging per download, it becomes quite expensive. The best bet are sites which charge a small membership fee which is time based. The membership is for a month, or a year, and within that time frame, it allows you unlimited download. Infact, such sites offer a wide range of packages to suit your needs.
